The Yorkshire Geological Society, founded in 1837, is an unincorporated membership society and a registered charity. It is governed by Officers and a Council (who serve as Trustees of the Society) elected annually in accordance with the Rules of the Society, which were last revised and updated on 8th October 2005, and with relevant charity law.

The Annual General Meeting was held at Weetwood Hall, Leeds, on Saturday 4th December 2010. As there were no postal nominations for Council, the new Officers and Council proposed by Council itself, as detailed below, were declared elected for 2011:

The President, Professor P. Wignall, then presented the Moore Medal to Mr Jack Morrell in recognition of his career, first as a schoolteacher and then as a lecturer at the Bradford Institute of Technology, later to become the University of Bradford, in the History and Philosophy of Science. During this time he has made major contributions to the understanding of the history of geology in our region and beyond, across almost two centuries. His latest project on the life and work of Herbert Wroot was of particular interest to many members. Mr. Morrell responded with a brief speech of acceptance.
