SUMMARY

Newly collected material from the Speeton Clay (Lower Cretaceous) indicates that the belemnite Præoxyteuthis ex gr. pugio enters the succession at the level of a widespread incursion of Boreal-derived Acroteuthis (Boreioteuthis). This is slightly earlier than previously recorded. Rare examples of Præoxyteuthis danfordi sp. nov. enter below this horizon indicating the existence of an earlier Præoxyteuthis fauna. Belemnite preservation indicates levels of non-sequence within the section corresponding to ammonite and belemnite zonal boundaries. The belemnite faunal changes do not coincide with the base of the Barremian as currently defined by ammonites. The new oxyteuthid Præoxyteuthis danfordi sp. nov. is described.
